WILL I BRUISE?

This is a common concern amongst patients seeking injectable treatments – and rightly so. A bruise can be a little painful, unsightly and a tell tale sign that you’ve had injectable treatments. Unfortunately, due to all the vasculature in the face there is always a small risk of bruising occurring with injectable treatments. Having said that, there are ways to minimise the risk of this bruising for a quicker recovery and to help achieve your desired results.

Here are some tips to help reduce the risk of bruising:

  1. Choose an experienced injector: Choose a medically qualified and experienced injector to administer your injectable treatments. Skilful technique can significantly reduce the likelihood of bruising.
  2. Avoid blood thinners: Common blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E should be avoided prior to treatment. Your medical history including medications will be discussed at your consultation – please do not stop taking prescribed medications without medical guidance.
  3. Alcohol and caffeine: Limit alcohol and caffeine intake in the days leading up to your treatment, as they can dilate blood vessels and potentially increase the risk of bruising. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol intake post treatment for at least 24 hours too.
  4. Arnica: Consider taking arnica supplement a few days before and after the procedure. This is a natural supplement which can help reduce bruising and swelling. It can also be applied as a topical cream to the area after treatment.
  5. Cold compress: Applying a cold compress to the injection sites after the procedure can constrict the blood vessels and minimise the risk of bruising. This is best done with an ice pack wrapped in a clean cloth/ thin towel applied gently for a few minutes.
  6. Gentle handling: Avoid touching or rubbing the treated area after the treatment. Take care when washing your face and pat it dry gently.
  7. Avoid exercise: Refrain from strenuous exercise or activities that increase blood flow to the face for at least 24 hours after the treatment.
  8. Avoid heat: Avoid hot showers, saunas and steam rooms for the first 24 hours post treatment, as these can increase the risk of bruising.
  9. Stay upright: Keep your head elevated as much as possible for the first few hours after the treatment to reduce swelling and minimise the risk of blood pooling in the treated area.
  10. Avoid sun exposure: Protect your skin from direct sunlight and heat after the procedure as UV rays can exacerbate swelling and bruising.
  11. Follow aftercare instructions: Adhere to specific post treatment instructions provided by your injector. You may be advised to avoid certain activities or products for a few days.

Please do keep in mind that bruising can occur despite taking precautions, and its severity varies among individuals. If you do experience bruising you can apply make-up/ cover-up as needed after the first 24 hours. Bruising typically resolves within a week or two.
